Ühelt kaldalt teisele, ehk Trogiri-Elefsina II osa

In English, please see below

Igal osalisel on lisaks proovikatsele kolm ametlikku katset. Tegemeist on väga ülla ja traditsiooniderikka alaga, suhtumine peab olema väärikas ja asjakohane. Võitja on laevas väga lugupeetud.

From Trogiri to Elefsina II part

So we had to travel over 200 miles. We did not turn to visit Albany, but headed for Corfu. On the morning of the 27th, we searched the whole ship and found the Greece flag, which had been travelling with us since Tallinn. Finally it was found from the second flag bag and during the early morning watch, while the sun was rising, we hoisted the flag - we had reached the destination. There has been thousands of miles underneath our keel before reaching Greece, captain promised to write down some statistics one day. We started the whole trip already a year ago.

So only a tenth of Odyssey. When we sailed past Ithaka island few days later, it felt especially nostalgic. What once was read about in school and totally not reachable and seemed more like a fantasy land, was now right there next to us and part of our own Odussey.

But I am heading forward too quickly. Corfu Gouvia Marina greeted us with wonderful weather and great hospitality. While we were managing paperwork in the marina Office (which was a quick and professional procedure) a German sailors stepped inside and made an apology about not wanting to leave Greece yet. I then wondered why and he explained that they had planned to travel to Croatia but everyone had suggested against it, due to very complicated system of taxes, fines and paperwork which eventually always costed a small fortune. I have to say it was not our last time to hear that opinion in a marina.

We had our first proof right there. The same marina costed us three times less than a in a smaller marina in Split. We decided to stay for two nights, to adapt with the first one and then look around Corfu on the second day. On the same evening we headed out to explore the night life of the city. It seemed to us that life of the Greek is full of sunshine and lightness, (or was that the fault of the 5er Metaxa). We, who have been used to worry all the time, should visit Greece more to see that even on the hard times there are beautiful moments and life is good, and appreciating this you can get over every trouble. In case you want to, of course. Already the fact that there are all sorts of fruit trees everywhere, starting with the oranges, mandarines, lemons or the mix of those, and you can pick them right there is very exciting for us.  the next morning our boatswain, Malta Juss, who had visited Corfu before, draw us a map of places which should certainly be visited. So we rented a car, many scooters and an ATV to look around the mountains, villages and fortresses. It is quite hard to describe all that with words, let the pictures do their own work. Anyway I suggest to go and explore Corfu, as our company - the whole family and other animals - said that this was one of the greatest days of the trip. In the evening we had reached a mountain which is called Pantokrator (similar to a famous band in Estonia). Greetings!

The soccer finals later and then heading forward during the night. Our next destination was an island called Kefallonia, which is situated next to Ithaca island. Our idea was to explore the island and gather some supplies, also welcome one more person on board - Sonia, who came from England.

Greece continued to surprise us, the day rate for staying on the quay had gone even lower. They asked only 12 euros and we didn’t even think of bargaining. The weather was very warm and we were greeted with warmth and a good local vine made it all even brighter. So that a young Estonian woman, who was passing by and visited us, was even a bit frightened to find such good cheering and loud welcoming of a own countrywoman but luckily she gathered herself when we introduced the ship for her and she adapted well. At night we had to head towards Pilos, covering about 100miles.

Our stop in Pilos was not long as we couldn’t have a good spot to stay in. We waited on a place where a ferry was soon coming to. Some of us went shopping and we talked to a coast guard official who said something about paperwork and promised to wait for us in the office. Once our crew reached the offie, the coast guard had left and nobody else cared for our papers so we left it at that and headed off.

Afterwards we found out that there is some sort of a vignette paper which should collect stamps from every port in Greece so that the officials are able to track you and then collect the taxes. But even that system, compared to Croatia, was 10 times cheeper and mostly we were not asked for that paper either.

But moving forward to Monemvasia now, again over 100 miles. So what to do during those endless hours on the sea, when its not time to be in the watch behind the steer or down in the galley. There are many old ways, for example starting from Pilos we had our own little variety show. Old sailor Udu told us how sailors dream of being a famous star and they tell this dream to others while moving themselves by a known song. We heard the story from different performers and created a jury out of local handful specialists. The winner was Shakira, who had the costume mostly made of the most precious and important material on the ship - the toilet paper.

On the last day of May we reached Monemvasiasse. A lovely small place. We had a certain plan to find meat here for the late night Captan Grill. The was no worries with the marina, someone just told us that it was ok to stay here and that he would soon return to speak with us some more. After some adventures in the city we found the meat shop, which was of course closed for siesta. Nobody answered on the number which was left on the door of the shop. But fortunately, some local who was passing by understood our grief and called the owner of the shop, who then arrived within minutes. Once we had our meat we headed back to the ship to prepare some marinade. Then arrived also the marina officer who checked our stay for - no surprise there anymore - 12 euros.  In the evening we organised the long waited Captain Grill, captain himself grilled the meat which he prepared and everybody were satisfied.

So satisfied that Malta Juss brought out his guitar and played some Estonian music, which sounded well over water in the Greece night. And we left the marina at night.

The next day something extraordinary happened, after about 13 months of adventures, near the Ydra island Hoppet finally reached the longitude of E 23° 31´ 38´´ which is exactly the same as Haapsalu has in Estonia, and it is Hoppet’s home. It would have been a real sin just to pass it by, we had to celebrate somehow.

A little swim for refreshment and then our good old throwing of the pot.

Who still doesn’t know the game, then heres a shot introduction. The competitors are usually those who are on board and everybody is free to choose their competing name. The purpose is to throw a pot, which is attached to a line and is borrowed from the galley, at least 2 meters away and sink it. Every competitor has three chances. It is considered a very proud sport and it must be taken with full seriousness. The winner will earn the respect of everybody.

Then greetings to Haapsalu to all of her promenades and white dames from Greece with love. And then sailing again. Early in the morning we had reached our destination and had suntanned all thanks to the Greece sun. It was a bit sorrowful In the Elefsina marina, we had to say goodby to all who had grown to like each other and get along well, but big thanks to the wonderful company, until next time! In June and July Hoppet is among with the Theatre people but already the 1. of August we will wait new adventurers on our board to travel to Valletta, Malta for the 10th of August.

We reached Elefsina with the sound of music and the stars giving light.
Good morning, a new day, lets get the ship in order, right away
We said good by, people headed up to Olympos, with joy in their flight
they saw the sea from there, but only from far, far away.

Ühelt kaldalt teisele, ehk Trogiri-Elefsina I osa.

In English, please see below.

Jutustan Sulle, oh Blogi, sest Hoppetist, Trogiri linnas,
Seiklused selsamal saarel merel Joonia me seilame seega
Jälle istume sadama äärel sööme grilli peal küpsetet liha -
Odysseusest erinevalt me õigeaegselt saime Elefsina.

Aga asja juurde.

Peale 40 päeva Horvaatias oli aeg hakata liikuma Ateena poole, et Hoppet saaks jällegi näitlejarahva käsutusse. Juuni alguses saab ometi alguse Meeting the Odyssey kolmas etapp - kaks kuud seilamist, proove ja etendusi Kreekas.

Esmaspäeva hommikul käisime turul värsket kraami ostmas, see kujunes üsna lihtsaks.

Kaugel sellest!

Meid ootab ees Kreeka.

I'll tell you, oh dear Blog, of those travels on Hoppet, who, in city of Trogiri,
was waiting for her comrades, coming from the great flight of Nordica,
aye, to the land, which was to be the beginning of our journey,
howbeit adjourned by the powerful winds almighty. Yet even so
once the gods calmed and winds brought down, we headed to
another city, called Dubrovnik, to say farewell to a land called Croatia.
Our longing, amongst others, was to meet the flourishing island of Corfu,
for it became the place of our adventures, in the middle of the Jonian sea,
aye, and then we cooked the meat and ate, again on the sea side of the city,
to gather our strengths. For yet we had a purpose to full fill, differing from Odyssey,
the man of many devices and wanders, to reach, as expected, the city of Elefsina.

But now, to the story.

After 40 days in Croatia, it was time to head towards Athens in order for Hoppet to meet again with the actors. As of course, in June there’s time to start with “Meeting the Odyssey” third part - two months of sailing, rehearsals, and performance in Greece. The preliminary plan was to meet the theatre company in Italy, not far from Split on the other side of the Adrain sea, but they had so many preparations still to do that they asked us to meet them in Elefsina, Greece.

Then, barely couple of weeks before setting sails we realised that we will have more than 10 days to cross the sea and only the crew on board, we asked ourselves, do we really have to make one of the most beautiful trips with an empty ship. That would have been sad, so we shared the word to those who would be interested to come on board. The Facebook makes miracles, Lemps sent out a cry for help in a sailing community and the word got out faster than wind. With a few days we had gathered about ten interested parties to sail with us. The problem solved - the ship who was meant to carry people didn’t have to make one of the worlds nicest trip being empty and the crew had additional helping hands.

The plan was to set sail on the same day, but we decided to stay in Trogiri for one more night to gather more supplies and the wind was also very strong (and of course blowing aback to us). It meant an unscheduled possibility for the guests to meet the old town of Trogiri, which is very impressive indeed. On Monday morning we visited the market for fresh goods which was a very simple task. Our market agent became to mrs Moment, who, at first sight sold only eggs, but if we asked for anything else she said only one word, “moment” - disappearing for a once and reappearing with a necessary product in hand.

In midday we set sails towards Dubrovnik, with a strong headwind it was a real tromping, but we needed to bunker. We reached ACI Marina and got our fuel (for 1,1 a litre for diesel) but we decided to stay the night on the already familiar quay, as it was hard to make any progress with that heavy wind and the weather forecast promised a change over night. Everybody got a city pass.

In the office of the marina we mentioned heading to Greece. To which we got an answer from the local worker that supposedly a neutral Italian travel writer had said that there is no point to go the Greece, as there is only strong gusts of winds and we were suggested to stay in Croatia. But we weren’t to be influenced, specially when we glanced the bill we got from staying for one night. That sum is not worth even mentioning, no one wouldn’t believe us anyhow.

An in the morning the wind had died away and we could head out towards Dubrovnik. The distance was about 55 miles, a regular routine life on the ship began. The watch hours and teams were set, the cooking and other tasks got divided.

And again it was interesting to see how those, who had never met before or heard of each other got a long well and created a good team. Of course the main crew knew each other thoroughly but the other 9 people had came a long into the unknown. The crew was alert and ready to interfere on complicated moments if there were to come up a reason, but nothing happened much and everything went smoothly. Was it the special aura from Hoppet or Udu’s long lasting monotone seas stories, in any case it was pleasing to acknowledge that all kind of cooperation was very good. Probably it was just the fact that everybody on board were experienced tavelers and familiar with life on the sea. One night even went by with du telling sharing the old seaman habit of telling different life puzzles to which everyone had to find a solution that would also help themselves in the coming future.

At night we reached Dubrovnik. We decided to check ourselves out of the country on the afternoon to be able to meet the city first and gather some more goods to the ship. As it was again a new city to us. A funny story happened on the marina with a young Estonian man who had accidentally found us. He had been in Croatia for 10 years already, working for a wealthy boat owner, and never he had seen the Estonian flag before during that time. Even more sincere was his happiness when he heard the Hoppet’s home town is Haapsalu, the same as his. The ways of life are curious. You can wake up on a regular day and not even imagine that it would be so easy to visit your hometown during the same day with such a little effort.

Early in the evening we cast off from Dubrovnik. Good by dearest Croatia, Greece is waiting for us…

By a passanger.

Hoppeti ülesõit Valetta-Split II osa - Hoppet's crossing Valletta-Split II part.

In English please see below.

Üheks eriliseks meeskonnaliikmeks oli seekord laevameister Lasse, kelle käe all Hoppeti kere renoveeriti.

Tavaline joonia rohevarblane - The regular ionian green sparrow

Lasse

Mõnus meeskond - A happy crew

Mart sätib topsleid - Mart adjusts the top sails

Our goal was to reach Split lately on Saturday evening. If we considered our average speed to be mourned 6 knots then we counted that covering this distance would take at least three days so we could not afford any stops. The weather at first was very suitable, we had a favourable wind and among with the crew we hoisted all sails, Mart even climbed the to the top of the mast to hoist the topsails - we continued our journey with the ship proudly in full sail. Of course, those of us who had more experience already made some bets about how the wind would hold as it usually disappears the moment when the sails get up. And so it went this time also.. But the wind came back very soon and Hoppet reached it’s good 6-7 knots under the sails and quite a long way like this. Someone even mentioned seeing 8 knots under the sails.

It was interesting to see how people forgot the usual from 8 am to 5 pm rhythm. The life on the ship has it own pace, everybody moved and rested according to their watch hours and what it felt best. Meelis and Kristi took care of the galley, making and inventory about the sea stores and making a menu for the week. We didn't manage to find fresh meat from Syracuse so we had to manage with the german can food with macaronis, potatoes and of course luckily we still had some salads and soups from Estonia, mostly salad Tervis and Toome

There is enough to do on the ship. Mainly it is very important to keep order at all times, and then there are smaller repairs and maintenance needing to be done. Surely, there is also enough time to enjoy the life on sea and the good quality of the company. From time to time, different parts of the ship filled with different groups of people who discussed the more and less peculiar things of the world having the Italian vine as a refreshment.

The day became evening and it turned into a night. The moon which was quite thin when we started our journey had grown bigger. The night was calm, without any incidents. We kept our schedule and noticed in the morning that we are even a little ahead, which made us hope for a nice lunch time to look around the land on the south of Split.

This time our very special member among the crew was Lasse, under who’s supervision were done most of the renovations on Hoppet. He and all others who took part on those works can be very proud, as Hoppet have survived all hardships with honour. Lasse was often found deep in thoughts, looking at different details. It was agreed to organise ship-raising all together for the regular maintenance on the next winter. The hell will freeze up before the work on a ship will end.

Another special guest on board was a rabbit who weren't count in when we left. And suddenly a bird appeared when we didn’t even see the land anymore. Everybody was excited of what kind of bird this could be or where had it came from. Nobody could recognise it really, but as long as it was not a woodpecker or a cormorant it was alright with us. It flew around the ship, looking for a place and and then disappeared as it had came. It was considered to be a regular ionian green sparrow.

Watch times, feasting, working on the ship, the creakily rigging and sun burned sailors and the feeling of fun company were some of the keywords with which the day went by again. despite the unstable winds we had sailed well and during the night we were about the reach over the heal of the boot to the Adrian sea.

And we did. The wind picked up speed on Thursday. It was actually very interesting for us to notice the changes in the wind. They usually came in every 20 minutes or so. Anyway, on the Thursday night the chairs started to fly around in the galley so we agreed to change the course not to be affected that much of those side waves. For the Friday morning we had reached the eastern coast of the Adrian sea and we started to head north in between the beautiful archipelago to reach Split.
It was a beautiful day. For the northern people it is not so every day business to sail in between the mountains. In the end of the day we got a nice present as the sunset came among the sounds of guitar music and the taste of Italian vine.

Our ETA was approximately at midnight and so it went, we reached Split. As the ship was almost out of sea stores we had an agreement with Udu and Pekka that they would be waiting for us with dinner and drink on the quay. We already exchanged greetings and ate their bringing with our eyes as we started to throw the lines when suddenly Hoppet got called to the quay of the border guard….
We did not have any choice. The routine check took more than 2 hours and surely we already got a fine for not telling ahead that we were sailing between the islands, for our big surprise we had to pay the fines for Vignetta - which is also for information for all other sailings vessels, who want to move around these waters - we had to pay for the licence to be there, as tourism seems to be the biggest and probably only income for the country there.

Finally we reached our destination. The joy of the trip was great and nobody went so sleepy even though it was very late already…

.. as there was a lot of impressions to share.

Ülesõit Valletta - Split / The Crossin between Malta and Croatia

In English please below..

Koos meeskonnaga sai munsterrolli 18 nime. Seega pidi täiesti uus meeskond saama laeva haldamisega hakkama.

Hoppet Syracuse kai ääres / In Syracuse

After the early spring trips between Cicely and Malta, Hoppet planned to head to Croatia and stay in Split for a month and a half. It is easy to reach Split, as the flight connections with Split are very good. The area is highly appreciated among our people and with a good reason - the nature is very beautiful and locals are very kind. Not to mention an interesting history.
The crossing was meant to happen during 9-16th April. But strong spring winds had made the crew careful. It was very likely that we would not reach our destination on right time as we might seek shelter from a storm in some marina.

As expected, it didn’t go planned. At first we couldn't leave Syracuse on time due to the strong winds, so we reached Malta on Saturday instead of Friday. Some crew members, who travelled to Valletta to meet Hoppet had to find a place to stay at night, but as they were experienced travellers they did not bother with hotels, instead they visited several pubs until closing time and  after that waited for the morning  under different shelters.

Even though Hoppet was greeted by happy and excited people on Saturday morning and everybody was ready to set sail. But we still had to have fuel which was ordered. And this t o o k  t i m e - although we already knew that southerners don’t rush with anything, it was still very annoying to wait. Of course we didn’t get the fuel before Monday noon, but after that we were really finally ready to leave. As the conditions in the harbour were very tight, it was difficult to manoeuvre, we also had to consider the ferries coming and going as there were no room for two ships at a time. Our idea was to follow a ferry on its way out of the harbour and it went well for some time but then we noticed that the ferry started to reverse to give way for a tourist sight seeing boat..

It is always very reassuring to watch the calmness of Hoppet's captain Ain in those situations. As the crew already run to get the fenders to spare those expensive plastic yachts from pumping into a big wooden boat and the shipowner started to look for insurance papers the captain didn’t even move a brow while manoeuvring in the tightest spots with a 30 meter ship which didn’t even have a bow thruster, the situation solved without any incidents. Those, who were on the ship for the first time, knew now that the crew and the captain can be trusted and all tension was gone. We waved to the Maltans and thanked the Malta Transport who valued our  historic ship highly and didn’t ask a sent for staying on their quay.

Among with the crew, there were 18 people on board, and also Udu, Pekka and the ship dog Max who had to leave in Syracuse to follow us by car via land. This meant a week of vacation for Udu and Pekka, but for us it made things more complicated. Udu is the one who knows where everything is on the ship and Pekka is the chef. Now the new crew had to manage without them.

But there were some very experienced sailors among us this time on the ship and they were all full of will. We had people from Estonia, Finland, Aland and even from far Germany. The official language  was set to be English but in the end it was a mixture of English, Finnish, Italian and Swedish, which everybody understood perfectly of course. Two hour watches were set and to rush ahead I have to say that Hoppet probably haven’t had watches followed this accurately as they were this time, maybe only when the Maritime school boys were on board.

At the beginning of our sailing the sun was shining but the wind was weak. Fortunately soon enough a favourable wind started blowing and of course we hailed all the sails. In early morning we reached Syracuse and everybody got a city pass for a day - we were clearly behind schedule. All hurried to see as much of the city as they could keeping in mind all of Udu's suggestions for sightseeing.
The crew had their last chance to acquire provisions. To calculate it for 18 people for 4 to 5 days on sea is not a problem for an experienced sailors, but those who had not done it before, needed besides the aura of Archimedes also some Frizzante. Udu and Pekka helped to clear a mooring and approximately 500 miles were ahead of us.

Hoppeti Ülestõusmispüha

In English please see below.

24-27. märts, Sürakuuse, Sitsiilia - Sliema, Malta

Keskmist mõõtu torm Sürakuusel tuli ja läks. Need, kes me parasjagu Sitsiilia avarustes seiklemas polnud, olime valves, Hoppetil silma peal hoidmas. Tugevamad tuuled kipuvad tihtilugu sadamasse elu juurde tooma.

Uued reisijad said meie laeva ainumase pühaduse, Udu, poolt pühitsetud, olles sellest hetkeks isegi pisut kohkunud, kuid nüüd võib Hoppet taas suunduda Sürakuuset vallutama.

Oli mõnus, aitäh. Teele

24-27 March - Syracuse, Sicily - Sliema, Malta

A medium sized storm on Syracuse came and went. Those, who weren’t out discovering Sicily, were on watch to make sure Hoppet was alright. Stronger winds usually bring more life into harbours. Different vessels come to find shelter from the harsh weather and bring variety into local small yachts and fishing boats. On that evening a beautiful yacht, with a mast as high that it takes three sets of crosstrees and made probably out of bird bone, came right next to Hoppet. The next morning our Udu was already making acquaintance and offering help the yacht’s crew. The winds and waves were much harder on the yacht than on ours as it was right out on the corner of the quay. The passengers got evacuated and only the two members of the crew stayed behind. Once the yacht was properly secured with double lines, the crew members came to check out our Hoppet. A German captain and an American first mate were kindly asked to come on board and look around. We introduced Hoppet and it’s history and the quests were sincerely impressed. You can come from a boat made out of bird bone, but Hoppet will always find a way to touch you.

Once the storm passed we thanked the Holy Nubilus from the manna from heaven and for the safety of Hoppet and decided to celebrate our little victory. We went out to the local market to buy mussels and other different sea creatures and exotic fruits and took it all on board. The galley soon smelled of delicious food and even those who just arrived from discovering Sicily couldn’t hold back to praise the cook. It is mandatory to get to know the local food culture especially for a real tourist with self respect, as Estonians usually are, no matter if the mussels are dead or alive. The evening became plentiful not only by the tastes of food and drink, but also for the ambience in the ship.

The week started to end too soon. The 25th of March, Friday, started for Hoppet in Syracuse, but in the midnight the galeas was already in the middle of the Mediterranean sea, in the Canal of Malta. But before we could set sails, we gave Hoppet a brand new layer of white paint and cleaned the bell, which was especially hard work, as everyone of course knows if you ring the bell without a good reason, you have to buy drinks for everyone. For the departure, all quests were back on board, exchanging impressions of Sicily and discussing the curiosities of local people, for example why is the regular rent car insurance valid everywhere else in Sicily but not in the city centre of Catania, which is near Syracuse. We made our own conclusions, spiced them up with Estonian humour and headed to Malta instead. The dinner was served on deck during the sunset.

In the midnight the moon had set himself up in the sky. I lay on deck after the end of my watch and gazed the masts drawing half circles between the shining stars. Some pieces of clouds gazed back at me between the masts and the moon spread little lakes of light on the wavy sea. We did dot catch the bat, who had got lost in the middle of the sea and rested on our gales, we just let it show us it's way back home.

We arrived to the Malta night half an hour earlier than expected, we docked next to Valletta, in the city centre of Sliema, it was almost 4 a clock in the early morning. We figured that the locals would know what has hit them in the morning as we came, but as hard as we tried during that Saturday, they didn’t notice us before Sunday morning when the trumpets sang, the cannons shot, the flags flapped and the parade came to greet us. So we named it the Ascension day. Soon our guests arrived and the only holy on board - Udu - consecrated the quests, who at first were are little shaken though. Now Hoppet was ready to go and conquer Syracuse again.

It was awesome, thank you. Teele
